March Facebook Madness

Posted by sohmer on March 12, 2013

If you’ve not been on Rayne’s facebook page of late, you’ll have missed daily contests and giveaways, where we’re sending out LICD books to the lucky winners as part of our 10 years of LICD celebration.

For the next week, beginning tomorrow morning, we’re going to do something a little different and a little more aggressive.

Every day, for the next week, we’ll be giving away 2 books.

And to enter? Once the comic is posted, around 9 AM EST, you just have ‘share’ it. That’s it. You have 24 hours to share the comics, and then we’ll do a random drawing.

For those in the anti-facebook crowd, no worries, as we’ll be doing the contest on other social networks as well.

But for today, head on over to Rayne’s page, and start sharing.

Because sharing is caring.

Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

Your site has gone to shit. It seems you did a redesign just so you can get more ads to show per comic without it looking like more ads. No more forum. comment text that is almost completly unreadbale. Really, what is wrong with you? Look look at the attachment and how shitty or site looks.

The Forums are being worked on as we speak……………….

      Yep!

Strange. The text it all white for me… I don’t understand what’s happening there…

You could’ve gotten in touch with our webmaster to troubleshoot the issue. He’ll be more than happy to help.

    • pook

There was no contact information for him that i could find at the time. The Issue does now appear to be resolved. As of now, there is no webmaster on the contact us page. The closest was the community manager, but this didn’t seem like a forum or irc issue and didn’t want to email the wrong person.

What’s funny is Sohmer wants to ask people while emphasizing ‘what’s your problem with our layout for your FREE comic’? He has then gone on to say repeatedly that the new site layout – that a number of people seem to dislike (whether majority or not isn’t really relevant at the moment) – isn’t designed for more ad clicks or merchandise, but to show off news/updates on more ‘free’ (read: Be grateful and stop bitching) content.

Yes, its free – and you generally keep it updated/running with a minimal amount of problems (same can’t be said for other poor comic artists that host through your BlindFerret company *cough* Danielle Corsetto’s Girls With Slingshots *cough*). But I’m not too sure how many of your readers, at least American readers, are too interested in catching up on a page where they’re looking to read a webcomic and be first struck with Sohmer’s nuggets of insight on ‘what to read/watch’ or my ultimate favorite, ‘Political points of views/gripes on American government coming from a Canadian’ – because we so really care what any non-American thinks, and MAYBE the occasional bit of information on the LICD Animated Series which we may or may not even care about.

I already removed you from my twitter feed because idealistic idiocy can only grate on my nerves for so long. And while I’m used to the occasional (becoming more often) bit of Sohmer’s political views/soapbox in the comic, I’d rather not be stuck seeing it twice.

So, good luck in your endeavors, continue on with your comic or not. I’ll enjoy Lar’s artwork minus your commentary/writing from other sources and I’m sure we’ll all just go on our merry way without really caring what either of us thinks of the other.

Also, TED Talks are garbage and many times unfounded by facts but following whatever trend/hipster ‘FOCUS PROBLEM’ in the world. And that whole arc relating to TED in the past was almost enough to make me stop caring to check back on the comic. Funny how a poor web design did it over TED. Even I didn’t see that one coming. Sheesh.

You could’ve saved us both time if you had just written: “I don’t like you”

      ;)

    • lovefort86

You could have saved the world a lot of time by just telling random strangers every day that you’re not funny rather than demonstrating this fact to the internet for ten years through your webcomics.

      HA! You win ;)

    • JadenAmirmoez

Come now Sohmer, if you can’t think of a better comeback than that Marvel will never let you write Deadpool!

Of course, they would actually have to know who you are first ;)

    • kids_table

I found this really interesting because I have a completely different viewpoint than you, but we still agree on the base issue.

I used to be active in the forums when they existed, and I’ve been reading the comic since ’04. I regularly read the news updates. In fact, I remember a news post when, after returning from a con, Sohmer expressed disappointment in finding out how few people read the newsposts, I’ve been thinking about it a lot since the redesign. I almost always found the newsposts interesting, even the ‘Political points of views/gripes on American government coming from a Canadian’, because I too am Canadian and I am interested in how American politics can sometimes shape the world. Furthermore, I usually agreed with the viewpoints expressed. And I adore TED Talks. Did you see the one by Chip Kidd about designing book covers? It’s really good.

But I don’t like the new layout *at all*, the focus of the website, which was once on the comic, has been changed completely to focus on the news posts. I feel like they’re being shoved down my throat, and yeah, I’m a little resentful. Shouldn’t the focus of a webcomic website, logically be on the comic?

And it’s cool to see (below) that the forums are being worked on, although they’ve been less and less active for some time. But it would have been courteous to see that information in a newspost instead of the comments section.

Meh, I don’t dislike Sohmer or the comic. Like kids_table, I find the comic to be very good. However, I too feel the major turn off of the site layout being in focus of the news posts and less about the comic. The major down point of the layout for me is that it is incompatible with my tablets and my phones, so I have to come onto my pc just to see the comic.
Glad to know the forums will be back though. I was quite shocked to see the forums were gone. I’m hoping there is some reorganization and cleanups for it.

  • Elora

I like your comic, whether I have to click more than once or not. It’s not like one extra click is a whole lot of work, after all… ;)

  • Brendan

So much whining. My favourite is the people who waste a paragraph of their time whining about how it takes longer to get to the comic.
