To make up for my absence on...Tuesday? Or was it Wednesday? Either way, I probably wasn't missed.

Goofball comedian and Hollywood box-office biggie Adam Sandler is about to join the ranks of Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The producers of the Tony-winning Broadway smash "Hairspray," which was based on the 1988 John Waters film, announced plans Thursday to bring a musical adaptation of Sandler's 1998 hit "The Wedding Singer" to Broadway a year from now.

Sandler has become almost as famous for his off-the-wall, knee-slapping musical compositions as for his uncouth, sophomoric repartee, and two songs he co-wrote with screenplay scribe Tim Herlihy — likely "Somebody Kill Me" and "Grow Old With You" — will be incorporated into the stage version of the film, according to The New York Times.

"The Wedding Singer," a romantic comedy set in the 1980s — that era of dubious fashion decisions — starred Sandler as Robbie Hart, a failed rocker forced to make his living entertaining wedding-reception guests. He falls in love with waitress Julia Sullivan, played by Drew Barrymore, after his fiancee leaves him at the altar. Alas, Sullivan is engaged to philandering yuppie Glenn Gulia; Sandler's character steps in, stops the nuptials, and wins the girl. The end.

It's not as though this marks a first for Broadway. In recent years, producers have frequently turned to popular culture for inspiration. In addition to the successful "Hairspray," a musical interpretation of the Steve Martin film "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" has made its way to the stage, and current hit "Spamalot" is based on "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." "Lennon" — a musical about the late Beatles singer/songwriter John Lennon — recently made its debut, while Elvis Presley inspired "All Shook Up," and "Good Vibrations" features Beach Boys classics. Plans are under way to bring "Billy Elliot" (currently running in London's West End) and "Legally Blonde" to the stage.

Before its Broadway bow in April 2006, "The Wedding Singer" will make its world premiere at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle on February 8. There will be a limited run through February 19, with previews starting in New York sometime in March. No casting has been announced for the production.

Oh my.
Yorick
I dunno if I'd see it, since I never see anything on Broadway, but I absolutely love that movie.

I'm not too weirded out by The Wedding Singer coming to Broadway. But Legally Blonde? blink.gif

They just go to Orange County, pick up any random blonde. Then let her wander around on stage confused for an hour. Same thing.
