I went and saw it tonight, and I just have to say that I'm kinda disappointed. I mean, I loved the original. It was creepy, and well written, and well done, and just all around a good scary mystery movie.
The second one, you're at kind of a fault, because as a sequel, you already know much about the antagonist. There's not all that much that they can do that you haven't seen before.
But, still, disappointment. I mean, sure, there were a few points in the movie that I jumped. But afterwards I was like "Ehhh." The first one had me scared after watching the movie.
The other thing about this one, is that the story is kind of bleh. Basic premise is that Rachel and Aiden move away and Samara ends up finding them. Whee.
But, okay. In the first movie, there was a sense of mystery. The Morgans go away, they come back with an evil child. You don't know for sure whether she's adopted or if they were involved in some kind of weird ritual. Reason being is that Mr. Morgan says to Rachel, "My wife was not supposed to have a child." And it's just well done, because you can't help but wonder where is she from? And I liked that it was left up to the audience.
But in the second one, they completely split the mystery open, and gave it facts and a basis. And, I don't know, it felt too open.
[SPOILERS]
Okay, so Rachel finds out that Samara was adopted, and her mother just happened to be in that same city, or at least within a few hours drive, in an institution. She had been put there after trying to kill Samara, because, of course, she was evil. So Rachel talks to the woman and this kind of thing happens every few years where Samara feels gipped of a mom so she posesses another child. And it's just so...I don't know. Like the entire thing is prerecorded. And I was just like "Oh for God's sakes." You know, it's like, how could Rachel have not looked into her family in the first one. And why was it so easy to track down, and such. I don't know, there were lots of things about it that bothered me.
