Alright, we have tear-jerkers and movie endings so I figured it would only be fitting to ask about what movie openings you guys and gals found to be the best.
My personal favorite is the performance by Johnny Depp in
Don Juan de Marco. From the walk to the restaurant to the enchantment of the redhead to the line bowing out of the scene it was all wonderfully done. I'm a big Depp fan, the man is SMOOTH. I can only aspire to be so cool

. In the words of my friend Chastity, "He makes being a dirty, grimy-haired pirate look sexy!!!"
Another opening scene (well, second scene technically) I really liked was the beach landing in
Saving Private Ryan. That was just an amazing scene to behold. I was reading some articles in magazines and newspapers (I was working at the library in HS at the time) about the beach landing and the consensus from those who were there was, "That is
exactly how it was."

I still kind of gape in awe watching the beginning of Star Wars A New Hope with the long ass Star Destroyer.

"Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?"
Trainspotting, for anyone who isn't familiar with it. I love that narration.

(1) There's an old movie with Martin Short - Inner Space.
I've always liked the way it starts in this ice-cave-like crystalline structure to start out with, then pans out to be a glass of ice... Always thought that was too creative...
(2) SW openings - orchestra, space, scrolling story... never found a better movie that pulls me in...

I really liked the opening to Fight Club. How he keeps restarting earlier so he can explain it better. Hinting at things to come and drawing you in from the get go.

Star Wars - the original. Particuarly when I saw it the first time and everything was so entirely awesome (those effects are old hat now, but they were earthshaking at the time).
You get heavy dramma from the scrolling prologue, but then the rumble starts, you hear it come from behind and over you, and then the tip of the ship appears on screen. The lasers start firing, you get your first glance at the stormtroopers - wow.
Not a bit deal today, but it was beyond awesome the first time I saw it.

I like the opening of the (most recent version of the) Phantom of the Opera, the bit where they go from black and white to color.

Die Hard 3
The building exploding really just brings the viewer in.
Along Came a Spider
The Car Chase Scene at first, chilling.

Opening (well 2nd scene really, but the one everyone remembers) scene of Saving Private Ryan is brutally accurate and well done...simply unforgetabble.
I also really liked the beginnning of Gladiator.

Star Wars and Trainspotting are indeed killer. The opening of Fellowship is pretty impressive as well. Honourable mention: The Lion King.

Gonna go with Swordfish here... just very cool.
I like how it just begins in the action and takes you back to how it happened... very interesting.
I wish I had seen Trainspotting it seems to come up a lot perhaps I should go and rent it.

I loved the beginning to "A Series of Unfortunate Events" - basically a super happy, colour saturated world full of elves, squirrels and bunnies singing an orchestra-accompanied song about what a Loverly, Loverly World it is... and then its bluntly interrupted by the narrator then to the bleak world.

the best opening scene to a movie, is, without a doubt, Sergio Leonne's Once upon a time in the west...just fucking brilliant!
