Full Version: Anime Movie Recommendations?
:: LEAST I COULD DO FORUM :: > The Interests > Movies
Yorick
Until I moved in with my current roommate, I'd never seen an anime movie, never really cared to. Since though, we've watched Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, Ninja Scroll, and maybe one or two others that I can't remember. And, what else can I say but that I'm absolutely hooked. wink.gif

If anyone has any other movie recommendations, I'd be most appreciative. smile.gif
Testicon
Perfect Blue
Vampire Hunter D (both of them)
Spirited Away
Blackjack
Kite
Princess Mononoke

and for series anime
Trigun
Rouruni Kenshin (at least the first 3 arcs)
Cowboy Bebop
not DBZ (though entertaining, it plays out like a soap opera where it takes 40 episodes to depict one fight)
Ninja Scroll: The series

i'll add more when i think of them
Katiz
Trigun is great, but buying the series will cost you a whole lot of money, and Adult Swim stopped showing it. Cowboy Bebop is quite good, and they made a really fun movie out if it, definitely worth watching.
QSan
If you can find it Blood the Last Vampire was fun
Aku Cola
Cowboy Bebop was the last anime movie that entertained me, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is enjoyable.

My local blockbuster has Berserk available to rent, and that's simply the best anime I've seen, so check that out sometime. It shouldn't be too hard to find.
Yorick
Doh, yeah, Princess Mononoke was the other one I've seen, I really liked it.

Both of my brothers are really big into Trigun, I watched a couple episodes, but I didn't really find it anything special. I don't know, I'm not so big on the series thing.

I will definitely look into the others. Thanks! biggrin.gif
NaOH
Neon Genesis goddamn Evangelion.

The series was pure killingy-smashy action, and the movie was a COMPLETE mindfuck.
TricksterMyth
A-men it was.

And if you just want some neat animation and some robo-buttkicking, with bit of innuendo and T&A thrown in, check out Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. Then again I'm just a sucker for hardsuits wink.gif
Cybercat
If you want series, Noir is by far my favorite. I especially like the soundtrack of that one.
Tobalaz
The Armitage movies and Appleseed were great.
Robotech always was and always will be my favorite anime. It's the only Anime I own all of and wouldn't have it any other way.
Cowboy Bebop was a close second, and the movie is great as well. Trigun was really good. Hellsing, Dirty Pair, and Gunsmith Cats are worth your time.
Gi@nT
Gotta agree with the recomendations of Cowboy Bebop and Tri-Gun. Other than that the hands down best anime movie, if not best animated movie, I have ever seen is "Warriors of the Wind". This old movie store used to have it in my home town but their copy burnt out (I must have done it, rented it a 100 times or so) and I have not been able to find it. If you can though it is definately worth a rent if not buying it right there. Its fairly old, late 1980s I think.
Gogetas Nemesis
Contrary to what that icky Testicon says, Dragon ball Z can be a very good watch if you have a spare week on your hands. biggrin.gif

If not or you just wanna kill off some brain cells, Excel Saga is for you. think of the most pointless thing youve ever seen. then make an anime out of it but supercharge it with 10X the needed amount of craziness and sugar.

I can only sit thru about 3 episodes before I start to foam at the mouth

LORD ILLPALAZO!
Aku Cola
Alright, I'm sorry for listing Berserk as you said you are looking for movies rather than series, and now everyone is posting series.

Dragon Ball Z sucks. If the show were the length of a normal series, or even if it were 30 or so episodes, it would be entertaining. Unfortunetly it is a drawn out, repetative, and (if dubbed) fucking retarded exercise in futility. Avoid it. All 291 motherfucking episodes of it.

Eva is HIGHLY over-rated, and not as intelligent as it wishes to be - but is certainly interesting.

Trigun is half entertaining and goofy, half (in fact around episode 13 or 14 it takes a sharp turn and you wonder if you are watching the same show) dark and serious.

Cowboy Bebop is known for it's music. The movie, however, is a nice stand-alone little story that I enjoyed more than most of the series.

Hellsing is quite good if you enjoy that kind of mythology, I would put that second behind Berserk - if you're looking for something serious. It's also short, only 13 episodes, which is about half the episodes most series listed here have.

There tend to be two extremes and mixing the two makes enjoyable but over-all forgetable shows.

If you want to watch something of the other extreme and probably in private, check out some Love Hina or Azumanga Daioh. ONLY if you want something cute and awkward to explain to other males.

Excel Saga is indeed funny, but most of it's humor comes from mocking the series listed here.

For something simply bizarre and funny, check out Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. It's ridiculous, and unlisenced here in the states so feel free to download it.

As for actual movies, the first Armitage movie is pretty entertaining, but I'd avoid the sequal. I also stand by The Cowboy Bebop Movie, as well as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Cool flicks, nothing amazing, but I'd rather point you in the direction of spending an hour and a half with a movie that's only "good" than have you spend 13 hours hoping you enjoy a series.

Actually, 'Warriors of the Wind' is the heavily edited version of 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind', which is actually due out for a DVD release next month. (Though I haven't seen Warriors for awhile for the same reason as Giant) I also recommend this one. Actually, almost anything that Miyazaki has done I recommend a great deal - Mononoke, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa.

Grave of the Fireflies is pretty good as long as you don't mind a lack of action.

I'm afraid I don't have too many movie recommendations since I mostly watch series. I for one didn't care for Evangelion (or at least the last few episodes and the movies which sort of ruined the whole series for me) and thought Bebop was good but not all that great.
Waycos
I've really liked the Last Exile and Lain series. Also a big fan of the Lodoss War series.
SuperflDex
Naruto is an excellent series as well. Its a current series in Japan, so its not technically out in the US now, but you can find excellent fansubs to download within a day or two of a new episode, of which there is one per week. It starts a touch slow, but it picks up quick and kicks ass. Highly recommended. Also, Samurai X is killer as far as movies go. The series, Ruroni Kenshin, got cheesy imo, but the flick rocked my socks. You should definitely catch that one.

Just make sure you don't accidently get Samurai XXX instead, that wasn't very interesting.

I think the original Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash series were better then the redux version so look for that first. Probably the best combination of story and art available (IMHO). AD Police is also good, it is an offshoot of Bubblegum Crisis.

Dagger of Kamui
Supernatural Beast City
Galaxy Express
Devilman
Baoh
Appleseed
geez, my memory is really failing...

But I am a devout fan of the really early stuff like Grandizer, Battle of the Planets, and Star Blazers (substitute Japanese names as desired, these are the names I knew them as when I was a kid).

Give me a good Super Robo Teamup and I am happy.

I love Ninja Scroll. That was my first anime movie. Besides that, you should really check out the Cowboy Bebop series and movie, Evangelion (sp?), and Macross Plus. All excellent films.

Armitage (sp?) II and III were good movies as well. Has anyone seen Ghost in the Shell 2 yet?

Well, I was going to recommend something, but it seems everyone's already done that.

My favorites
Cowboy Bebop: Everything about it, the series, the OSTs, the Movie. All great and entertaining stuff.

Rurouni Kenshin: Great samurai action. More of a shoujo than hard core action though. But there's enough action to keep you hooked. If looking for something more 'manly', look for Samurai X. It's the OAV's and the same Kenshin, except this is during the war, when he killed.

Trigun: Innocent, yet serious, fucking great.

Evagelion: People say it's overrated. Maybe it is, but there's no denying the excellent art, and premise of it. The movies were less than superb, so stick with the series, it'll be entertaining enough.

Love Hina: I watched this when I was in a particularly emo stage in my life. It helps if you believe in true love, and want to watch like a romance sort of anime.

Samurai Champloo: Another samurai anime. But it's fucking great. The music's sort of like a techno, trance thing that really fucking cool. You might have to download the eps using torrents. I don't think it's out in the US.

I can't remember what else I've watched...However, I do know that I used to have 40 GB of anime but for the life of me, I can't remember what else I downloaded.
Lomex
Ghost in the Shell 2 (GitS): Innocence wasn't bad. Its a MAJOR head f**k though. Some trippy stuff going on. Its not quite up to the standard of the first though.
GitS has 2 series by the way, they're pretty well thought of but I've not got my grubby mits on them yet.

Now... the Appleseed remake is real nice. Even though the cell shading fade annoys the hell out of me, the story is great. And anyone who watched the original and was disappointed that the eight legged cannon didn't do much will absolutely love this remake. PLUS the great news is this is part of a trillogy, 2nd should hit mid-year and the 3rd in 2006.
Appleseed comics demand a great following in Japan... but then so do worn nickers.

If you like your hentai to have plots go with Urotsukidoji (4 films). These are really evil demonic films, and I swear to GOD I didn't know they were hentai till I saw the first.... then the second.

As mentioned, Gunsmith Cats is a great series with very pervy minded artists. Other great T&A series' would be Vandread and Burn Up.

Animenfo.com is a nice site for listing anime, and theres a forum too. The votes make me think that this site is prodominately voted on by americans, as Tenchi Muyo would never slip as far as 97 on a japanese poll.

Full Metal Alchemist listed as number 4 is a FRIGGING AWESOME series. Viewers of Trigun and Vandread will love this. Its the same mix of mostly serious script with a blend of irreverent humour. The serious has some very serious moments though. It truely kicks ass, and I've only seen the first 30 eps (out of 51).

Furi Kuri a.k.a FLCL is a small 6 ep series, and its comedy gold. They don't care about breaking the 4th wall at all, one scene cuts to them backstage with a little pic-in-pic of the action still going. Another rips into southpark.

From the top 200 on animenfo.com the ones I've seen and recommend are:

4 Fullmetal Alchemist
6 Berserk
9 Cowboy Bebop (watch before Knockin')
18 Cowboy Bebop - Knockin' on heaven's door
22 Neon Genesis Evangelion
29 Furi Kuri
30 Full Metal Panic!
36 Trigun
38 Vandread 2
45 Noir
62 Vandread (watch it before 2 though)
63 Initial D - First Stage (it aint bad if you like that sort of thing, animation is a tad odd though)
67 Hellsing
79 Ghost in the Shell
94 Akira
100 Evangelion: End of Evangelion
107 Macross Plus
154 Ninja Scroll
169 Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040
173 Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin the 3rd is the charaters name, this isn't the 3rd film, but there are others)

Blue Submarine 6 doesn't make the list, which is a crying shame.
I personally liked Fist of the North Star film (animated version not the real actors one).
Gunsmith cats doesn't make it on either.... yet Card Captor gets in there twice.... damn stupid kids, shouldn't be allowed to vote. Least the frigging SPINNING TOPS one doesn't make it on. So horrible I've blanked the name from my brain.

(jebus... did I type all that?)

Cowboy Bebop for sure top movie

Fist of the north star (not the live action one)

Metropolis, quirky style but fantastic movie

Gunbuster, very long can get a bit confusing but it's fantastic

Spriggan, omg that has some quality martial arts animation

Any of the Lupin series of movies, very funny 70's/80's style animation reminds me of pink panther a bit

For series I would recomend Outlaw Star was a great series dunno if they did a movie

Martian successor Nadesico (so funny and great story havent seen the movie yet but it's supposed to be good, also has an equaly excelent english dub like Cowboy Bebop, great casts for both)
SAMURAI-X
Did someone say"fist of the north star"?

Oh man dude that movie is old school..lol biggrin.gif

I admit though that movie KICK MAJOR @$$......... laugh.gif laugh.gif
The Illusionist
I thought Orguss 2 was great, for random dimesion-jumping mecha fun, thought beyond that thre's not much of a plot.

I would also recommend the Street Fighter movies - good old nostalgia, and it's always great to hear the famous "Hadoken!" yelled out in seizure-inducing intensity and in stereo sound tongue.gif
ZeroAkarui
what is wrong with u people?! Not one person has said Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). It's only the best anime of all time (in my opinion). Actually the manga is a lot better, but the series in good too.
Other then GTO, listen to what everyone else said. Neon Genesis, Trigun, Ranma 1/2.
Prodigal7512
I gotta recommend the best series/mini-series I have ever seen "Read or Die" They did both a 3 episode Mini-Series, and a longer 2 season Series. Both are excellent.
Gunslinger Gun is another series that will probably sadden you, but it is good none-the-less.
Van Dread is a fun "Giant Robot all out attack" series, Hellsing is a pretty awesome series as well, and for new stuff I recomment Samurai Champloo (it's by the same guys who did Cowboy Bebop, so if you liked that you'll enjoy this as well).
Hope you continue to enjoy the awesomeness of anime.

Cowboy Bebop: I'm going with the crowd on this. Best series ever. I love the music, the atmosphere, the settings and the characters, even the little girl, boy thing grew on me.

FLCL: this is weird bizarre very fun anime. Not the awesome action of Ninja Scroll and the like, but if you want oddball comedy with demons protruding from peoples skulls for good measure I recomend it.

Battle Angel Alita: Probably the first anime I ever saw (my sister told me to sit down and shut up) but it still makes me a sad panda today.

Naruto: ooh ninja's. it's excellent but a big investment at 130+ episodes (and counting). Worth it if you've got a good net connection.

One Piece: ooh pirates. Same boat as Naruto although there are apparently movies out there somewhere.

Orotsukidoji: can you say tentacle rape? WTHIWWJP? I've only seen two edited episodes, something about a demon womb, I dunno. Get high and watch this and you'll be scarred for life.

Ranma 1/2: oh the immoral things I would do. This shows fun but a little formulaic but can be forgiven for the signs the panda man holds up.

Blood:The Last Vampire: short and sweet.

Wait there are 2 Vampire Hunter D's? Maybe the other one explains how that thing got on his hand. Probably not though...

The movie is....odd. In Japan, after the original series, there was a game that ties it to the movie, followed by another game. So basically, the Nadesico movie will start off to be very confusing and end on a cliff-hangar.

But Ruri is older now and looking awesome.

Yes, there is and yes, it does. xD

Well, I WAS going to suggest some stuff, but everyone already mentioned mine, except for Chobits. Chobits is good if you like a lil sci-fi action, as it is based on everyone having a walking, talking computer that looks like a person. Very cute and funny. It's one of those "hard to explain to other guys" ones. Oo and watch .Hack//SIGN if you like the sci-fi. It's based on a MMORPG called "the World" and a mysterious boy who can't seem to log out.

Ranma 1/2 is good, trigun is great, Cowboy Bebop is awesome (but everyone ALWAYS uses the church blowing up scene in music vids... which annoys the hell out of me) and Tenchi is pretty decent. Naruto is awesome becuase ninjas rule lol. FMA (Full Metal Alchemist) is also pretty hilarious. Witch Hunter Robin is okay, but left me feeling like there was supposed to be more to it then there was.

Oh, Bleach is another good one that I don't think anyone mentioned. It's about a not so average guy who just so happens to kick the crap out of evil spirits. Very cool, and I love the animation style.

If you are more into the classic Japan fanatasy type style, you should also watch Inu-Yasha: A Feudal Fairytale, Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play and Gensomaden Saiyuki series. They all take place in feudal Japan and deal with demons and monsters and the like. Inu-Yasha is getting pretty popular here, but it is also pretty heavily edited in the enlish version (like all televised anime) so I personally prefer subbed episodes.

P.S. If you want to know more about any of these (or want episodes emailed to you wink.gif ) then just ask.
CerealKiller
Ya Bleach is a really fun anime I've been watching. Ep 34 just came out this week and it hasnt been licensed yet, so a little searching on animesuki will get you all of them using torrents.
I'll comment more later, but its quitting time...*happy dance*

Ya, Naruto is up to ep 137 right now. The current storyline is great too. Naruto just had a full on blowout fight with Uchiha Saske. It was one of the best fight scenes from the entire show in my opinion.
Way too much going on to talk about it all, but ya keep watching em and I'm sure you won't feal let down. Very cool stuff happening from ep 75 on.

Princess Mononoke

first anime I ever saw... gotta love a movie where the hero shoot a arrow that not only decapatates the taget but helps him loss 2 arms in the proccess.

I have a small correction to make...

Fushigi Yuugi (and any of it's incarnations) actually takes place in China. It starts off in modern Japan, but when the girls enter the book, they are transported to China. I'm not sure of the exact era, since the time difference between the "Shijin tenchi sho" (the book they're transported into) and the real world always changes. The reason why everyone is speaking Japanese is because 1) it's a Japanese show and 2) the power of the book (or so, say many fans). Miaka is able to speak to and understand the people she encounters in the book, but she is unable to read Chinese.

Anyway...anime movie recommendations...Tokyo Godfathers was pretty interesting. And I'd also recommend any of the Inuyasha movies (the third movie will go on sale this September). It seems that everyone has already mentioned the other movies I've seen and would recommend, so I won't bother naming them again.

If we're talking about series to explore... Speed Grapher, Sousei no Aquarion, Tsubasa and Bleach would be the top ones I'd tell you to watch. When they're available in the states anyway... ninja.gif

GTO is definitely a great series too... I haven't experienced the live-action version, but the live-action movie will be released later this summer! Next month, I think. Sorimachi Takashi plays the part of Onizuka ("Enzo" from HOTMAN and HOTMAN2; he also sings the opening and ending theme of a few versions) and the ANN review of the live-action series version said that he did a good job.
