Full Version: DVD Day and a Poll!
:: LEAST I COULD DO FORUM :: > The Interests > Movies

Alrighty folks, another Tuesday another set of DVDs waiting on those rental racks, albeit pickings are a bit slim this week...

First up, The Wedding Date, a romantic comedy starring Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney. Actually took my fiance to this one on Valentine's Day this year and I have to admit it wasn't bad. Nothing phenominal mind you, but if you're looking for a cute, funny comedy for a date this weekend this would well suit that purpose.

Second, and topping my list, Sin City. If you don't know what this one's about you must have been living under a rock for the past 8 months. Personally as soon as I get paid this one will be joining my personal collection...arguably the best film I have seen this year.

That, however, brings me to the topic of the poll. A number of you fine folks, as well as some other sources, have pointed out that this release is going to be little besides the film. I'm curious as to how that affects your willingness to purchase a DVD. Personally, I'm not much a fan of special features, especially if they cost me $10 extra bucks. As such I'm likely to pick this up ASAP. What's the concensous here? Do you need the ultimate special edition to be released before you buy the film?

It depends on the special features. In Sin City's case, I've already seen the film about 6-7 times, so I can wait for the extras, and I'm hoping the extras will be worth it.

Other times it depends, er, I can only really use TV shows as an example, but it depends on the quality of the extras. Angel's Season 1 had a few commentarys which were interesting and I felt worth it. I saw a Simpsons ep with commentary and it was basically the writers saying: "Omfg, that joke was really funny" "yeah, made me laugh" "heheheheheheheheheh".

So sleepy that didn't make sense to me either.

Yeah, I saw Sin City in theaters 5-6 times. I love the dollar theater sometimes..

I'm a whore for special features. I like commentaries (though some are boring as HELL), I like behind the scenes featurettes, I like unique features that show there was some thought and care put into the disk. I'll pay a few extra bucks for it.

In some cases I'll pay a bunch of extra bucks for it. Criterion Collection dvds are SO good, but cost quite a bit more than normal. Double in some cases! I think my copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was $45 for the Criterion edition. So much love is in that little two disc set.

While these did not influence me to buy the discs, I love what they are doing with the Simpsons and what they did with the Futurama DVDs. Commentary on each and every single episode ever made. It's beautiful! It made Futurama a lot more intimate for me, and it was great to learn a lot of background on how it got started and the little stories behind everything.

I'm a whore for the extras.

As for Sin City, I've seen it enough times to wait. And the special features aren't all arbitrary here, there will be new scenes put in the movie (mainly a few in A Hard Goodbye and pile in That Yellow Bastard), and have options to watch segments through completely.

On the more arbitrary side, Rodriguez does very interesting and entertaining behind the scenes clips called "10-minute flick school"s, which he says there will be two of, and a "10-minute cooking school". Expect a lot of disection of scenes looks at how these visuals were actually reproduced for film. His commentaries are interesting and basically a continual disection of effects with a few stories, as well.

if I've seen the movies the first thing I look at are the special features and deleted scenes, other wise it's straight to the movie !!!
Majkai
I tend to be curious about, and want to see the deleted scenes/directors cut/unrated versions that come out, so if I'm going to buy, I prefer to wait until these come out, because I don't want to have to buy 2 copies of the same movie...

If it's something that really captures my interest, I'll watch the special features. Like the Special Features for Firefly. And, yeah, I'd definitely want them for Sin City too. But, yeah, it depends.

Hey, found a review of the special features on the Sin City DVD.

The Extras:
One thing becomes immediately obvious when looking at the bonus features on this DVD – a Sin City special edition DVD is on the way. The only thing included here is a 10-minute promotional video that only gives a brief taste of the making of the movie. There are no extended interviews with the cast and crew, no behind the scenes specials on the effects, nothing on the makeup, and nothing on the music. If you like bonus features, then you're going to be very disappointed. I would only recommend buying this DVD if you can't wait to get a better version later.

The same site, found here, gave the special features 5 out of 10.

Oh and another quick question. I've been looking for a site that will tell me the release dates of films and DVDs in Europe, but I haven't had any luck. If one of you guys knows of such a site I'd really appreciate a PM telling me where to look. Thanks.

I"m an idiot, I'll probably buy the special edition of Sin City even though I already bought the bare bones Sin City (I only saw it once in theaters and couldn't really wait till it came out on DVD.... my theater costs more than some DVDs)
MissPeachi
The only movie which I've bought purely for the extra features was Lord of the Rings Trilogy, on the extended editions. I'd already got all three of the normal two-disc theatrical releases, but couldn't help myself for the extended editions.

But I haven't done so with any other movie I've bought. I did buy the directors cut of Donnie Darko when I already had a copy of the theatrical release, but it was a pirate copy, so it probably doesn't count.

Btw, Gi@nt, There is a magazine available monthly which gives reviews and release dates in cinema and DVD. I don't know how great teh website is, but its here.

I loved, loved, LOVED the movie. Saw it opening day. It was a powerhouse. The three stories were each done masterfully. The movie itself earns a 9.5/10.

The problem with this DVD is it's bare-bones: Movie. A single, 10-minute Behind-the-scenes featurette. Three unrelated trailers. Bah. Teh suck. Where are the "making of" vignettes, cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes footage? Bah. Teh suck. 2/10.

Overrall, I would give the whole DVD a 6/10. Because the movie is far more important than extras; although I still want them. I already bought it, but I would recommend waiting for the inevitable Special Edition.

Man, I told you and everyone else this like 3 times. But nooooo.
Sam
/me waiting for Special Edition.

Mod Edit: May not have seen it TMFT but my DVD Day topic for 16/08/05 already brings up Sin City DVD and the special features on it. I've even linked to a site with another review. No need for two threads on the same info, so merged.

Edit #2: Well looks like I blew my first merge, did this one backwards, which effectively killed my poll, oh well live and learn.

Basically, I don't mind waiting time for an extended edition if it's basically the same cost. I like to have a complete film. However, if the extras are gonna cost me a good amount extra (eg, LotR) I'm not gonna shell out the extra money for featurettes that I'm gonna watch once. Because, face it, there are only so many times you can see them scout locations for the Shire. I'll just buy the plain Jane version and rent the extras from Blockbuster if the movie is good enough that I want to see how it was made.
